Imran Khan, one of Pakistan’s most prominent politicians, is recovering in hospital after being injured falling from an elevated platform at an election rally.
The former cricketer had been urging Pakistanis to vote in Saturday’s parliamentary elections. After being hoisted onto the stage by a forklift truck in Lahore, Imran Khan sustained several injuries to his back. A CT scan later identified a minor fracture to the head along with eleven stitches.
The Sixty-year-old and his security guards fell from the truck when wooden planks which formed a makeshift platform collapsed suddenly.
Although this was in exceptional circumstances, it goes to show how easily accidents can occur. Falls from height are one of the leading causes of death in the workplace in the UK. There were 40 recorded deaths in Britain in 2012 caused by falls from height.
After the accident to Imran Khan and recent fire in India, are the current Health and Safety and Fire Regulations stringent enough to maintain the safety of members of the general public and all staff involved?
Regarding these two incidents, were risk assessments or method statements ever carried out by the companies and if not, why?
There are still many height and fire related deaths in Britain alone, even with the high standard of Health and Safety information readily available. It is easy to see how accidents occur when these guidelines and rules are not implemented.
